On marketing in venture capital

I was recently on EUVC podcast, chatting with Natasha Lytton (Seedcamp), Jeroen van Doornik (Pacenotes) and Andreas Munk Holm about the increasing importance of marketing in our ecosystem, and all things VC miles (it's a different kind of frequent flyer membership).

A couple of highlights in the episode that resonated:

  • The importance of the "hacker mentality"—there is no such thing as a playbook in our industry, so you have to iterate a lot to find your differentiator.
  • The beauty of partnership-led companies is that you can take calculated risks and build long-term value while playing to people's strengths.
  • The power of building an enduring "franchise brand"—a firm-level brand that can stand the test of time and individual contributors is ultimately what separates the most successful firms.
  • The potential of AI in marketing—it reminds me of the early days of the internet when blogging first emerged... I was a teenager at the time... and the sense of excitement was the same as today.
